Excellencies,Ladies and Gentlemen,
Climate Change is the defining issue of our time.
According to the recent IPCC Report, we are already experiencing the consequences of 1°C global warming through extreme weather events, rising sea levels and diminishing Arctic sea ice.
The scale of potential damage from climate change poses a major systemic risk to our future well-being, especially for vulnerable societies.
The 2030 Agenda and the interconnected Sustainable Development Goals, which include the standalone SDG 13 on Climate Action, provide the best framework for tackling the climate emergency. Everyone stands to gain, including women and children, old and young, persons with disabilities and those living in small island developing states. The benefits of coordinated action on sustainable development and climate change will surely multiply, as more countries act in a coherent manner.Excellencies,
The Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda are our shared commitment to put people and planet on course for a better future.
Realizing that vision requires increased international cooperation among all stakeholders – on specific, strategic, bold and time-bound plans of action and partnerships.
We must do more if we want to achieve the goals and targets we have committed to by 2030.
The Climate and SDGs Synergy Conference is a critical part of the UN’s comprehensive review of climate action in 2019. UN DESA is proud to co-convene this conference as a contribution to promoting such joined-up action, at all levels.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The time to act is now.
We look forward to working with all of you to mobilize ambitions, actions and commitments toward the Climate Action Summit, for the accelerated implementation of both the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement.
Thank you.
