Reception for the 2018 HLPF and ECOSOC High-level Segment

Ambassador Marie Chatardová, President of ECOSOC,Mr. Secretary-General,Excellencies,Distinguished Delegates,Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of all staff of the UN Secretariat who have supported the Economic and Social Council and the HLPF over the past year, I express my greatest appreciation and thanks to Amb. Chatardova for her leadership throughout the entire 2018 ECOSOC cycle.

The cycle is now culminating in the High-level political forum and the ECOSOC High-level Segment.

This third session of HLPF will lead us to the fourth year of the HLPF in 2019, when we will convene under the auspices of both ECOSOC and the General Assembly.

Over the past days, we have addressed the challenging task of identifying new ways to work, including progress, challenges and gaps in an international setting that has already changed since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in 2015.

We have had thought-provoking and insightful discussions on resilience and sustainability, and on national implementation of sustainable development.

These deliberations are the hallmark of the High-level political forum, which truly belongs to all.

Tomorrow, we shall reconvene for the final day of the 2018 ECOSOC High-level Segment to contemplate visions, scenarios and projections for the future of sustainable development.

We will also look at emerging technologies and how they can be leveraged for the SDGs.

Madam President,

This 2018 HLPF has shown your Presidency’s deep commitment and invaluable input to sustainable development, the 2030 Agenda, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The past 8 days are the culmination of your presidency of ECOSOC. But there is much more you have achieved during this year.

You convened an important meeting with the second committee on artificial intelligence and the SDGs, where we even benefitted from the view of the robot called Sofia.

The operational activities segment pioneered the first in-depth discussions on the proposals of the Secretary-General on the reform of the UN Development system.

The Humanitarian Affairs Segment allowed us to dig further into the essential question of dignity and leaving no one behind in humanitarian situations.

Madam President,

The Council held successful debates on the means to implement the SDGs at its Financing for Development Forum, Science Technology and Innovation Forum, and the Development Cooperation Forum. You devoted your days and nights in both preparing and chairing these Forums which have ensured great success of these meetings.

You kept the doors of the UN wide open to actors that are so critical to the SDGs, with the Partnerships Forum and the Youth Forum.

And you took the initiative to embark on a process and special meeting to discuss the realization of the SDGs through the participation of all. Those of us who attended the preparatory meeting in Prague will keep stimulating memories.

I wish to thank you for your leadership.

And I wish to congratulate you, Madam President, on the fruits of your labour – a highly successful HLPF and High-level Segment of ECOSOC.

Thank you very much. Cheers.
