Opening Remarks at Local and Regional Governments Commit to the Voluntary Local Review Declaration

Excellencies,Distinguished guests,Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to address this lively gathering.

Today’s event is first of all an opportunity to recognize the great work being done by local and regional governments to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It is also an occasion to support your leadership as we head towards the decisive Decade of Action on the Sustainable Development Goals.

What a great week we are having here at the UN! Just yesterday, at the Second High Level Local and Regional Governments Forum, we heard several good practices by local and regional governments on SDG implementation. Indeed, it was inspiring to hear that so many new SDG Acceleration Actions will be carried out in the different parts of the world.

Today, I am so pleased to see this pledge from local governments to develop Voluntary Local Reports and to commit to making the SDGs a reality for all. Considering the critical importance of the sub-national perspective for a comprehensive and meaningful follow up of the 2030 Agenda, I am happy to have the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, DESA, also support this Voluntary Local Review Declaration.

Before concluding, I take this opportunity to invite all of you to register your SDG Acceleration Actions through the dedicated online platform that is available at the SDG Summit website. We are certain that by combining commitment, leadership and concrete follow up, we can collectively achieve the 2030 Agenda.

Thank you.
