Mr. Liu message on the passing of Amb Ji Chaozhu

It is with sadness that we received news of the passing of Ambassador Ji Chaozhu, who served as United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Development Support and Management Services, from 1991 to 1996. On behalf of all of DESA, I send our deepest condolences to Ambassador Ji’s family at this difficult time.

Ambassador Ji was a distinguished leader with energy and vision. Under his stewardship, a new era of technical cooperation for development was ushered in, by reorienting capacity-building programmes from supply- to demand-driven. During his tenure, Ambassador Ji guided the Department’s capacity building work in priority areas as identified by developing countries, including in development planning, public administration and finance, human resources management, as well as in natural resource management, in particular, in integrated water resource management and sustainable energy.

Ambassador Ji’s work stands as a testament to the continued commitment of the United Nations to countries and people most in need. He understood this and took action to re-focus the UN’s technical support, by giving priority to requests for advisory services and capacity building from African countries and the LDCs.

A strong advocate for multilateralism, Ambassador Ji understood the need for a robust, multilateral approach to development. He will be missed.
