Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are living in truly historical times.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency have both revealed our inter-dependence, and our vulnerability.
Many countries are still undergoing waves of infection. Others are feeling some relief due to the availability of vaccines.
Yet, no one is safe until everyone is safe. This is true with the pandemic, and with society at large. Global challenges require global solutions supported by cooperation and solidarity.
However, the current trajectory of economic growth has resulted in high and rising inequalities in many countries, which is further compounded by the climate emergency, and unsustainable consumption and production patterns.
It is time for a paradigm shift to elevate care for community, and care for the planet. Let us focus, in this Decade of Action, on building a new social contract and a safer, greener world.
Rooted in principles of cooperation for mutual benefit, Cooperatives are examples of how a new kind of social contract may be achieved. And, how we can rebuild better together from the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
May this international day remind us all, of the benefits of collaboration in order to achieve prosperity for all.”
I thank you.
