Remarks at the Second World Summit for Social Development Press Briefing

Members of the press,

Good morning (or afternoon). Thank you for joining the press briefing on this second day of the Second World Summit for Social Development.

We meet in Doha at a critical time — 30 years after the first Summit, and just after the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.

The Doha Political Declaration adopted yesterday, comes at a time when we are facing the social, economic and political impacts of deepening inequalities, demographic shifts, and rapid technological and environmental changes.

The Declaration is a collective pledge to strengthen multilateralism and accelerate social development, leaving no one behind.

The Declaration reinforces commitments in critical areas from the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action—including poverty eradication; full and productive employment and decent work for all; social integration; gender equality; and universal education and healthcare.

In addition, the Declaration establishes new commitments to tackle urgent challenges, from food insecurity, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, to climate change and resilience, and social development financing.

The United Nations system will support Member States in the implementation and follow-up of these commitments.

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) will coordinate our efforts with the United Nations system to ensure that our collective efforts from Doha will accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and build on the vision set by the Pact for the Future, the Compromiso de Sevilla, and other global and regional frameworks.

Thank you.
