Opening Remarks at “Policy Meets the Pitch: Integrating Sport into Social Inclusion Agendas”

Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,
Athletes,
Colleagues, and friends,

It is a privilege to join you at this pivotal moment, as we harness the transformative power of sport for inclusive and sustainable development.

Sport is more than recreation. It is a proven enabler of social integration.

Around the world, sport-based initiatives break down barriers, foster inclusion, and reduce inequalities—especially for those left behind.

From refugee camps to urban neighborhoods, sport creates safe spaces for young people to grow, for girls to lead, and for communities to heal. It promotes health, builds resilience, and nurtures hope. These are not side benefits —they are central to a sustainable, resilient and inclusive future.

Member States recognize this power of sport.

The Doha Political Declaration calls for integrating culture and sport into development strategies. This builds on the Copenhagen Declaration and the Pact for the Future, recognizing sport as an integral part of sustainable development.

Sport is a bridge, connecting marginalized communities to education, employment, and leadership opportunities. It is a platform, amplifying voices too often unheard. And it is a pathway towards dignity, equality, and justice.

UN DESA is committed to turning this vision into actions in three key areas:

First, putting policy in place.

We will support Member States in developing inclusive sport policies and financing models.

Second, promoting partnership.

We will facilitate multistakeholder partnerships— bringing together governments, civil society, athletes and the private sector to strengthen the role of sport in development.

Third, promoting evidence-based approaches.

Through providing support to the General Assembly and technical assistance to Member States, we will leverage data to scale sport-based interventions for social development.

Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,

Let us champion sport, not only as a cultural asset, but as a fundamental driver of dignity, opportunity, and peace.

By investing in inclusive sport infrastructure, equitable access, and community-led initiatives, we can ensure that every person—regardless of gender, ability, or background —can play, participate, and thrive.

Together, let us build a world where the playing field is truly level for all.

Thank you.
