Advisory
Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and the inability to hold in-person meetings at the United Nations, the formal meetings of the 53rd session of the Commission, originally scheduled for 30 March – 3 April 2020, could not be held. Informal meetings and consultations on draft proposals were convened virtually by the Chair. In accordance with Economic and Social Council decisions 2020/205, 2020/206 and 2020/219, outcomes of the fifty-third session were adopted via silence procedure. The work of the session was concluded on 10 July 2020.

Agenda item 1: Election of officers*
* In accordance with Economic and Social Council decision 2005/213 of 31 March 2005, the Commission, immediately following the closure of the fifty-second session, held the first meeting of its fifty-third session for the sole purpose of electing a new Chair and other members of the Bureau, in accordance with rule 15 of the rules of procedure of the functional commissions of the Council. Only the Chair and one Vice-Chair were elected at the first meeting; therefore the Commission will resume agenda item 1 at its second meeting on 30 March 2020, in order to elect the Chair and other Bureau members for the 53rd session.
