Sustainable Development Goals are distant but still achievable, says UN DESA outgoing Chief Wu Hongbo

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are being discussed positively all over the world but they’re still “far away” from being reached.

That’s the long-term but optimistic view of the outgoing Under-Secretary-General for the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), Wu Hongbo, whose last day on the job is 31st July.

He said the ambitious 17 goals agreed by more than 190 countries nearly two years ago were being taken extremely seriously by dozens of countries who have already submitted their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs).

Among the goals are ending extreme poverty and hunger; and providing quality education and healthcare.

Mr. Wu has just overseen this year’s review of implementing the SDGs through the High Level Political Forum at UN Headquarters.

Liling Huang of UN Radio talked to him about the role the UN needed to play to get the SDGs on track for 2030.
