How is climate change affecting Catalonia?

Catalonia is already experiencing the tangible effects of the climate crisis, the most important of which are the increasingly frequent and severe droughts and heatwaves. Water scarcity is becoming one of the most serious structural problems affecting both agriculture and urban areas.

For this reason, as president of Catalonia's government, I am fully committed to developing a green and just transition in our community.

What action are you taking to address climate change?

Catalonia has developed its own climate commitments, including a regional NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) which sets a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

The region will achieve 50 per cent of clean energy by 2030. And we will do this by implementing 12,000 megawatts of wind and photovoltaic power.

Together, these frameworks aim to guide climate action across sectors, from energy and mobility to land use and water management.

We want to work towards energy sovereignty, embrace the shift to renewables and mobilize the resources needed to conserve the environment, landscape and biodiversity.

What are the benefits? Why is it important?

Catalonia's climate action is key to building a more liveable, equitable and resilient region. Acting now by reducing emissions and implementing adaptation measures means working to protect the well-being and livelihoods of current and future generations.

The future is at stake. Catalonia will be committed to these challenges and to leading a sustainable Europe and a sustainable world.
