The site contains national legislation of coastal States, as made available throughout the years to the United Nations. Whenever possible, the texts are accompanied by illustrative maps. In addition, the site contains other reference material, such as tables indicating the status of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, summary of national claims to maritime jurisdiction, etc. Within the foreseeable future, we plan to post the texts of treaties concerning the delimitation of maritime boundaries.

Information posted has been obtained from reliable sources with a view to ensuring the most accurate representation of the current status. Most of the information has already been published in the Law of the Sea Bulletin, a periodic publication of the Division or in other Law of the Sea publications issued to date. Despite extensive research, however, the site may not always reflect the latest developments, especially those which have not been brought to the attention of the Division, which is the publisher of the Bulletin. To report any new developments or inaccuracies regarding published information claims, please contact the Division, DC2-0460, United Nations, New York, NY 10017, or send an e-mail to the Division.

The designations employed and the presentation of the material on this site do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Secretariat of the United Nations concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries. Publication on this site of information concerning developments relating to the law of the sea emanating from actions and decisions taken by States does not imply recognition by the United Nations of the validity of the actions and decisions in question.

Registration under Article 102 of the Charter of the United Nations of an instrument, such as a maritime boundary delimitation agreement, submitted by a Member State does not imply a judgement by the Secretariat on the nature of the instrument, the status of a party, or any similar question. It is the understanding of the Secretariat that its action does not confer on the instrument the status of a treaty or an international agreement if it does not already have that status and does not confer on a party a status which it would not otherwise have.
