7 October 2024, New York: Today, the UN Palestinian Rights Committee Chair, Ambassador Cheikh Niang issued the following statement on Committee’s official X account (previously known as Twitter).:
One year after the tragic events that claimed over 1,200 lives in Israel, which I strongly condemned, and the devastating consequences of the disproportionate response in Gaza, where over 41,000—primarily women and children—have perished, it is clear that a ceasefire is urgently needed. As the UN Secretary-General has underscored, the situation in Gaza and the West Bank is dangerously destabilizing the region. This violence must cease. I urge an immediate halt of all hostilities, the release of all hostages, unrestricted humanitarian access, and an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, including Gaza. The path to peace depends on it.
