SECRETARY-GENERAL, ISRAEL'S FOREIGN MINISTER DISCUSS ISRAELI WITHDRAWAL FROM LEBANON

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

Secretary-General Kofi Annan met today with the Foreign Minister of Israel, David Levy, at United Nations Headquarters in New York. They discussed the upcoming Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in accordance with Security Council resolutions 425 and 426 of 1978, as described in the Foreign Minister's 17 April 2000 letter to the Secretary-General. The Secretary-General thanked Mr. Levy for the Israeli Government's cooperation during the recent visit of his Special Envoy, Terje RødLarsen. Mr. Levy pledged that Israel would continue to cooperate fully with the United Nations on this matter. The Secretary-General welcomed this pledge of cooperation.

The Secretary-General raised with Mr. Levy the requirements that would have to be met in order for the United Nations to be able to confirm that a complete withdrawal had taken place in compliance with 425 and 426. The Secretary-General informed Mr. Levy that he would soon submit his report to the Security Council on the implementation of 425.
