HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS WELCOMES SPECIAL SESSION

OF THE COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS ON VIOLENCE

IN OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson today welcomed the convening of a Special Session of the Commission on Human Rights to discuss the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian Territories in the context of the ongoing violence.

The Special Session will be convened at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 18 October 2000 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva and shall not exceed three days.

Pursuant to the request dated 3 October by the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations Office at Geneva on behalf of the Council of Arab Permanent members of the League of Arab States, 48 out of 53 State Members of the Commission have supported the convening of the Special Session.

This will be the fifth Special Session of the Commission on Human Rights.
