CABLEGRAM DATED 6 MARCH 1949 FROM THE ACTING MEDIATOR TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL TRANSMITTING THE TEXT OF A NOTE  ADDRESSED TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF SYRIA CONCERNING ARMISTICE NEGOTIATIONS

To the President of the Security Council:

"On 2 March I sent the following note to the Prime Minister of Syria:

'I have the honour to refer to my communication of 30 January 1949 inviting your Government and  the other Arab Governments other than Egypt to enter into Armistice Negotiations in pursuance of the resolution of the Security Council of 16 November l948.  I have subsequently received formal replies to this invitation from the Governments of Transjordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the Lebanon. To this date no reply has been received from your Government or from the Government of Yemen. In the meantime, as you know, a general armistice agreement between the Egyptian and Israeli forces has been concluded, and negotiations for similar agreement involving the forces of Transjordan and Lebanon are now underway under the United Nations Chairmanship at Rhodes and Ras en Nakoura respectively.

'I have reported all of these significant developments to the Security Council.

'I would greatly appreciate an early reply from your Government indicating the course it proposes to follow with regard to the armistice negotiations called for under the Security Council resolution of 16 November 1948.

'Ralph  Bunche,

Acting Mediator'

I have been advised that the reply of the Syrian Government will be forthcoming at en early date.

(Signed)

Ralph  Bunche,

Acting Mediator"
