Military situation in Jerusalem – Cablegram from Chairman SecCo Truce Commission


CABLEGRAM DATED 22 MAY 1948 FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL TRUCE COMMISSION FOR PALESTINE ADDRESSED TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL

The Chairman of the Security Council Truce Commission instructs me to transmit the following message to you:

"22 May SCTC 9.

The military situation has undergone a change since yesterday.  Intermittent bombardment of Jerusalem by artillery and mortar fire continues and is directed against various quarters of the City.  The Egyptian army appears to be at the gates of Bethleem eight kilometers from Jerusalem.  The Arab League is trying to obtain the surrender of the troops defending the Hebrew University and the Hadassah Hospital.
