Foreign Secretary meets Israeli Foreign Minister Livni – UK FCO press release/Non-UN document

FOREIGN SECRETARY MEETS ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTER TZIPI LIVNI (12/06/06)

The Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said in Luxembourg today:

'I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of those killed and injured in the train accident in Israeli earlier today.

'I was pleased today to meet the Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. We discussed the Middle East Peace Process, and agreed that working towards a negotiated two-state solution was the best way forward. We also discussed the humanitarian situation in the Occupied Territories and the need to ensure that the Palestinian people continue to receive aid. I raised the deteriorating security situation including the shelling of a beach in Gaza last week that left several civilians dead, but stressed that these dreadful events did not alter the need to find a negotiated way forward.

'I told Foreign Minister Livni that I am looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Olmert in London tomorrow.'
