Volunteers Distribute School Supplies to Children in Jenin Camp on International Youth day – UNDP Press Release

On International Youth Day Volunteers Distribute School Supplies to Children in Jenin Camp

Jerusalem, 24 August 2016 – Commemorating the 2016 International Youth Day under the theme “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the United Nations Volunteers Programme organized the distribution of school supplies to 250 children in Jenin Refugee Camp.

The project is implemented in partnership with the Not to Forget Association, through which fabrics and materials were provided for the women working in the sewing centre of the Association to produce the bags. Around 250 vulnerable families, in addition to 22 local and UN volunteers, participated in the activities following the distribution of the bags. Children enjoyed the clowns’ performances and the outdoor games organized throughout the fun day.

It is worth noting that Jenin Camp has one of the highest unemployment and poverty rates among West Bank refugee camps, contributing to higher dropout rates among younger children. UNDP’s Productive Families Economic Empowerment Programme (DEEP) supported the establishment and development of the sewing centre at the camp, under the umbrella of the “Not to Forget” Association, to produce educational games for nurseries and kindergartens from recycled fabrics and materials and market them. More than 15 women headed households were supported throughout the project.
