Weekly Highlights
● A 54 year-old Palestinian civilian died of wounds he sustained during the July-August 2014 hostilities in Gaza. The cumulative death toll among Palestinians during the conflict exceeds 2,200, of whom at least around 1,400 are believed to be civilians.
● 64 Palestinians, including nine children were injured by Israeli forces in the West Bank. The majority of incidents (41) took place in the context of demonstrations including in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike to protest their administrative detention, and weekly protests against the construction of the Barrier in Ni’lin (Ramallah) and access restrictions in Kafr Qaddum (Qalqiliya); as well as in the context of search and arrest operations (ten) and checkpoint related incidents (seven).
● On 26 May, members of armed groups reportedly fired at least one rocket into Israel. On 27 May, Israeli air forces reportedly fired numerous missiles into the Gaza strip: around half landed in the vicinity of the remnants of the Gaza International Airport, and the remaining at sites reportedly utilized by members of armed groups in Khan Yunis and Rafah, causing damage to some of the sites. No injuries were reported on either side. On at least ten occasions, Israeli forces opened fire at civilians in the Access Restricted Area (ARA) on land and at sea, injuring two fishermen. On one occasion, Egyptian naval forces opened fire at Palestinians boats approaching Egyptian waters, west of Rafah, no injuries or damage was reported.
● Israeli forces conducted 81 search and arrest operations in the West Bank. Overall, 104 Palestinians were arrested across the oPt, including a man who was shot and arrested near the fence surrounding Gaza, after crossing into Israel without authorization, and four fishermen along with a child who were arrested in the ARA at sea.
● The Israeli authorities demolished a house under construction in Ras al ‘Amud area in East Jerusalem and an agricultural structure in Rummana village (Jenin) for being built without Israeli-issued building permits, affecting 11 Palestinians, including six registered Palestine refugees.
● Two Israeli settler attacks resulting in damage to Palestinian property were recorded. One incident involved stone-throwing at and setting fire to, a house in Tel Rumeida in the H2 Area of Hebron city while the inhabitants were sleeping. The other incident involved stone throwing at passing vehicles on the road connecting Nahhalin to Husan (Bethlehem).
● Israeli media reported one Palestinian attack causing property damage in East Jerusalem, involving the throwing of a Molotov cocktail at an Israeli vehicle near Beit Hanina.
● On 25 May 2015, the Israel authorities, opened and, a few hours later reclosed the main road between the village of Beitin (2,700 residents) and Ramallah city, citing technical reasons. The road was opened for the first time since 2000, significantly reducing the distance required for Palestinians to reach Ramallah city.
● The Rafah crossing was opened between 26 and 28 May in one direction, allowing 1,629 people to cross into Gaza. This brings to 15 the number of days in which the crossing has been partially and intermittently opened since its closure on 24 October 2014, following an attack in Sinai.
