Brussels, 6 March 2007

The President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering met with Israeli Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Tzipi Livni

The President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering met with Israeli Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Tzipi Livni on Monday. This was their first meeting, at which they discussed the current situation in the Middle East. After the meeting President Pöttering stated:

"I am pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with Foreign Minister Livni at this early stage in my mandate. The Middle East is one of the priorities of my mandate and I hope to be able to visit the region, including addressing the Israeli Knesset.

My discussion with Ms Livni covered the current security situation following the Mecca Agreement. I restated my conviction that both Israelis and Palestinians have a right to live in their own state with secure borders.

In my discussion with Ms Livni I strongly underlined that it must be an absolute political priority to put the Middle East Peace Process back on track.

We also discussed the issue of the recent excavations in Jerusalem which is a highly emotional matter for all concerned. I hope that the matter can be resolved with mutual respect for different religious sensitivities.

Finally, we discussed the plight of the three Israeli soldiers currently being held. A humanitarian resolution to prisoner-taking is required, including for the 36 jailed Palestinian Members of Parliament."
