South Korea will provide assistance to help rebuild Gaza – ROK press release/Non-UN document

Korea to offer $2 million for Gaza reconstruction

16 October 2104 — Korea will provide an additional USD 2 million in assistance to help rebuild the Gaza Strip, Palestine, following military conflicts between Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic organization, and Israel across the region.

Seoul’s pledge came on October 12 when international leaders gathered in Cairo, Egypt, for the International Donors Conference on Financing the Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.

Co-hosted by Egypt, Norway and Palestine, the conference called for international assistance for the reconstruction of the war-ravaged region. Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon and Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil Elaraby were among those in attendance.

In July, the Korean government offered USD 1 million worth of medical supplies to Gaza to help it tackle the humanitarian crisis caused by the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“Taking everything into consideration, such as the gravity of its humanitarian crisis, the need for economic reconstruction, as well as the SOS from the Palestine government, and the international consensus to help rebuild the area, we, too, decided to offer additional assistance,” said an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

n addition to the USD 2 million offer, Korea plans to supply a total of USD 12 million in assistance by 2016 for development across all of Palestine.
