The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Brian Cowen T.D., speaking as President of the Council of the European Union, welcomed in principle the approval by the Israeli cabinet of the Gaza withdrawal proposals presented by Prime Minister Sharon. Minister Cowen recalled that the European Council in March had identified five elements which were necessary for a withdrawal to gain international support. The Minister said that the European Union is willing to support and be actively engaged in the withdrawal process through the Quartet, provided that it takes place in the context of the Roadmap. The Minister also said that he looked forward to the commencement of practical work to ensure the concrete implementation of the plan.
