Spain welcomes ceasefire in Gaza – Spanish Government communiqué – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation press release/Non-UN document

168-2012. CEASEFIRE IN GAZA

Madrid, 22 November 2012

Spain welcomes the declaration of a ceasefire to put an end to the violence in Gaza and Israel and recognises the mediation efforts carried out by Egypt which once again has decisively assumed responsibility for facilitating an end to the violence. The parties are now obliged to consolidate the ceasefire and refrain from carrying out any action that may jeopardise this.

Once again, it has been shown that violence only leads to further violence and suffering, and under no circumstances could it lead to the future peace and prosperity that both the Palestinians and Israelis deserve. It is therefore more urgent than ever that negotiations between the two parties resume in order to find a swift, fair and long-lasting solution to the conflict based on the coexistence of two states living in peace and security.
