African Union Commission Chairperson condemns recent Israeli incursions into Palestinian refugee camps – African Union press release/Non-UN document

PRESS RELEASE NO.049/2004

THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE AU COMMISSION CONDEMNS

RECENT ISRAELI INCURSIONS INTO REFUGEE CAMPS AND

DEMOLITION OF PALESTINIAN HOMES

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission condemns the recent incursion and aggression by the Israeli Defence Forces on Palestinian civilians at the Rafah refugee camp that have resulted in the death of 50 Palestinians, the vast majority of whom were women and children.  He further condemns the excessive use of force against a peaceful march in Rafah that resulted in the killing of 20 Palestinians including children.

The Chairperson expressed concern over the grave humanitarian consequences that resulted in hundreds of Palestinians made homeless as a result of the demolition of their homes.  He believes that these demolitions would only serve the purpose of increasing tension in the region and creating more refugees and internal displacement among Palestinians.

The African Union Commission joins the international community and the UN Security Council in calling on Israel to respect its obligations under international law and to put an end to its assault against the Palestinian people which continues to result in unnecessary loss of life, homelessness and an uncertain future.
