Palestinians take shelter in UNRWA’s Gaza Compound – UNRWA – statement

Statement on the Situation at the UNRWA Compound in Gaza

UNRWA is concerned about the plight of 16 people, all non-staff members, who have taken shelter in the UNRWA compound in Gaza. We understand that they were part of a group who had gathered at the UNRWA HQ calling for Palestinian reconciliation. All parties concerned are working to solve the situation peacefully and without violence. As a UN Agency, UNRWA’s actions are in keeping with the principles and practice of UN neutrality and human rights for all. We have notified the United Nations Humanitarian Co-ordinator who is following the case closely. UNRWA has appealed to the relevant authorities in Gaza to allow these sixteen people safe passage from the UNRWA compound and to guarantee their safety. The United Nations will continue to assess the situation and the circumstances of the 16 cases.

Chris Gunness, UNRWA Spokesperson
