EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council
A high-level European Parliament delegation headed by Mr Kyriacos Triantaphyllides (Cyprus) will visit Palestine from 29 April to 4 May 2007.
The delegation will be composed as follows:  Mr Proinsias DE ROSSA, Vice-Chair of the Delegation (Ireland); Mr John BOWIS (United Kingdom); Mrs Frederika BREPOELS (Belgium); Mr Chris DAVIES (United Kingdom); Mrs Caroline LUCAS (United Kingdom); Mrs Jamila MADEIRA (Portugal); Mrs Luisa MORGANTINI, EP Vice-President (Italy); Mr Hannes SWOBODA (Austria); Mr Georgios TOUSSAS (Greece); Mr Johannes VOGGENHUBER (Austria), and Mrs Rodi KRATSA, EP Vice-President and rapporteur for the MEDA Programme for the Committee on Budgetary Control (Greece).
The delegation is visiting Palestine at a crucial time following the formation of the Palestinian National Unity Government and the relaunching of the Arab League initiative that have raised hopes for a breakthrough and progress towards a solution of the Palestinian problem.  The delegation will discuss this and various aspects of the problem with high-level representatives of the Palestinian Legislative Council and the Palestinian Government.  The delegation will reiterate the position that the killing of and attacks on civilians is only increasing tensions and is jeopardizing prospects for solution.  It will echo the various appeals for the release of BBC journalist Alan Johnston.  The delegation will have the opportunity to receive direct information and see on the ground the very serious humanitarian situation experienced by the Palestinian people.
