Canada Concerned by EU Court’s Potential Delisting of Hamas

December 17, 2014 – Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement in response to the European Union General Court’s decision to remove Hamas from the EU’s list of terrorist organizations:

“We are deeply concerned by the decision of the EU General Court to annul, on procedural grounds, the measures against Hamas. Canada considers Hamas to be a terrorist organization, and it is listed as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code of Canada.

“Hamas indisputably remains a terrorist organization that daily threatens the lives of Israelis, be it through the kidnapping and murder of innocent Israeli teenagers or indiscriminate rocket fire into civilian areas.

“We understand that restrictive measures remain in place for the time being, and we call on the EU to take the immediate remedial steps necessary to keep Hamas listed as a terrorist entity.”
