JICA’s President Ogata
shows support for UNRWA camp rehabilitation efforts in Aleppo
Mrs. Sadako Ogata, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), toured today 10 March the congested barracks quarter of Neirab Camp and visited UNRWA facilities to service refugees in the newly-constructed part of Ein el-Tal Camp. She also met with Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) developing sports and music programmes for refugee youth.
Mrs. Ogata praised UNRWA’s work and explained that JICA's partnership with UNRWA was testimony to the commitment of the Japanese people to support Palestine refugees.
UNRWA Deputy Commissioner-General, Mr. Filippo Grandi, thanked Mrs. Ogata for JICA's valuable support: “Our friendship with JICA is producing meaningful and positive changes in the lives of Palestine refugees, particularly children,” said Grandi. “We are very keen to continue expand our fruitful work together and I thank you for your interest in UNRWA's re-housing efforts here in Aleppo.”
One of JICA’s chief contributions to UNRWA in Syria comes in the form of volunteers who bring their specialized knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to UNRWA schools. There are currently eleven JICA volunteers living and working with UNRWA in camps throughout the country.
UNRWA is a humanitarian and human development Agency providing education, health care, social services, micro-credit and emergency relief to over four million registered refugees living in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic.
