Gaza kids go for gold at Norway football cup

Oslo

Two weeks after children in Gaza achieved an astonishing double world record, a team of UNRWA students from the Strip have again made headlines at the Norway Cup, an international youth football tournament taking place in Oslo.

The tournament includes some 1,400 teams and 30,000 players from 50 nations around the world. This year, UNRWA/Gaza was one of them, along with two other Palestinian teams: one from Gaza, and Pace Palestine, from the West Bank.

The trip for the UNRWA school boys, funded by a private Gazan company, has certainly paid off; the boys reached the quarter-finals, demolishing their opponents along the way with such embarrassing defeats as 10 – 0.

Yesterday, the boys bowed out of the tournament with heads held high after losing a coin toss following a draw in the semi-finals with fellow countrymen Pace Palestine. The West Bank team went on to become the champions of their class, beating Norway.

The scorecard detailing UNRWA/Gaza’s ascent to the quarter finals can be found at the Norway Cup website: www.cupassist.net/resultater/vis_oppsett.php.
