Comment by the Information and Press Department on the situation
in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus
649-06-04-2015
For the last few days, the situation in the southern suburb of Damascus – the Yarmouk Palestinian camp – where, according to the UN, 18,000 refugees are staying at the present time, has become complicated.
According to the media, after persistent fighting — with Palestinian militia units also participating — the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organisations took over much of the camp.
Immediately afterwards, the terrorists began to brutally massacre the innocent peaceful population of the Palestinian camp.
Russia resolutely condemns the militants’ latest aggressive actions.
Their victims — apart from the civilian Syrian population — are Palestinian refugees who found refuge in Syria many decades ago.
We confirm our solidarity with the Palestinians and peaceful Syrian people. We are convinced that the tragic events taking place in the Yarmouk camp provide clear evidence of the need to effectively combine regional and international efforts in confronting terrorist groups anywhere. Double standards in this respect are extremely dangerous.
