Arab League Secretary General welcomes Security Council resolution 1544 – League of Arab States press release/Non-UN document (excerpts)

Secretary General Welcomes Security Council's Resolution and Calls for Implementation (20-5-2004)

Secretary General Amre Moussa of the Arab League expressed relief over the Security Council's resolution no. 1544 which condemned the Israeli criminal practices displayed in the killing of Palestinian civilians and demolishing of homes in Jericho and Gaza strip.

In the meantime, as stated by the Official Spokesman, Moussa expressed the Arab League's aspiration to have the subject resolution immediately implemented with necessary measures to be taken by the Security Council to ensure Israel's obedience to its provisions. In this context, Moussa stressed that the Security Council's role is not limited to issuing the resolution but as well to ensure implementation.

The Spokesman further said Secretary General Moussa strongly condemned the Israeli occupation forces' continuous practice of crimes against the human international law, even after the resolution has been issued. In this context, Moussa said Israel alone assumes the consequences of such practices, as no blame should be addressed to the Palestinians when they exercise their natural legitimate right in defending themselves and resisting the aggression against them.

On the other hand, Moussa called upon the Quadripartite International Committee to intensify their bids in order to terminate further deterioration. He said the Arab summit will take into consideration all the subject developments when tackling the Arab-Israeli conflict.
