Consultative Meeting Kicks Off in Ramallah

Beirut, 20 April 2004 (United Nations Information Service)—A Palestinian consultative meeting begins tomorrow at the Palestinian Ministry of Planning in Ramallah and will continue until 22 April 2004.

The meeting aims to develop a coordinated Palestinian vision for development in the country between the Palestinian Authority, civil society and the Palestinian private sector.

This meeting is being held in the framework of preparations for the Arab-International Forum on the Rehabilitation and Development of the occupied Palestinian territory. The Forum is scheduled for next September in Beirut. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for the Forum to be held in answer to two resolutions emanating from its ministerial sessions of 2001 and 2003.

Participants in the Ramallah meeting include Palestinian Planning Minister Nabil Kassis, National Economy and Trade Minister Maher Al Masri, Private Sector and Project Development Team Leader / Coordinator of the ESCWA Task Force on Palestine Antoine Mansour, and representatives from Palestinian civil organizations, the private sector, and international bodies.

ESCWA, the League of Arab States and the Palestinian Authority had called for forming an Arab, regional and international advisory group tasked with organizing the Arab-International Forum on the Rehabilitation and Development of the occupied Palestinian territories and preparing for it.
