Opening Ceremony for a Grassroots Project Supporting Disabled Children in Deheisha Refugee Camp
Today, on 6th November, 2013, Mr. Makoto Honda, Deputy Representative of Japan to the PA attended the opening ceremony of the project for Expanding and Improving the Educational Center for Disabled Children in the Deheisha Refugee Camp in the presence of Dr. Mohammad Abu Alia, Deputy Governor of Bethlehem, in addition to representatives from local authorities and institutions and UNRWA as well. The project was funded by the Government of Japan in February 2012, through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The Local Committee for Rehabilitation of the disabled in the Deheisha Refugee Camp used the grant of US $ 112,324 to enlarge the Center’s capacity by building five additional classrooms and facilitating the movement of disabled children throughout the center by installing an elevator. As a result, number of disabled children rose to around 300 where 70 children registered after expanding the center. In addition, with installing an elevator in this center, those children will obtain an educational opportunity and they can fully enjoy their school life without feeling much trouble or a sense of inferiority.
Mr. Honda in his speech emphasized Japan’s firm commitment of supporting Palestinian people from human security perspective as well as the importance of implementing social and economic development projects needed for Palestinian communities.
Since 1993 the Government of Japan has extended its official development assistance exceeding $1.34 billion, to the Palestinians. GGP projects have been formulated in collaboration with the Palestinian Authority through MoPAD since 2010.
