Presidency Declaration Calling for the Release of the Israeli Soldier taken Hostage in the Gaza Strip

The Presidency of the European Union is deeply concerned about the current deterioration of the security situation in the Middle East, in particular on the border between the Gaza strip and Israel following the attack by militant Palestinians and the abduction of Corporal Gilad Shalit of the Israeli Defence Forces. The Presidency calls for his immediate and unconditional release and urges the Palestinian leadership to undertake all necessary efforts in this regard.

Following direct contacts of the Presidency and High Representative Solana with both sides, the Presidency urges all parties to show restraint in this critical situation and to avoid further escalation. Hopes for a resumption of a political dialogue after the recent positive signals, including the meeting between Prime Minister Olmert and President Abbas, must not be put at risk.
