Stockholm Donor Conference on the Humanitarian Situation in the Palestinian territories – Swedish Foreign Ministry press release/Non-UN document

Stockholm Donor Conference on the Humanitarian Situation in the Palestinian Territories

Grand Hôtel, Stockholm, 1 September 2006. The situation in the Palestinian territories is still very serious, especially in Gaza. The shortage of water, electricity and healthcare is acute. The Stockholm Conference will discuss how humanitarian needs can be met as well as immediate reconstruction needs and the issue of humanitarian access.

The great and growing need for help above all in Gaza led to a review by the UN of its humanitarian appeal for the Palestinian territories. This appeal is considerably underfinanced. Only USD 153 million of the requested USD 384 million has been paid to the appeal. In addition, aid requirements are greater than is evident from the appeal, since the humanitarian situation has worsened.

Delegations attending the meeting will include a number of EU Member States, the USA, Egypt and Australia. Moreover, a number of large international organisations have been invited, such as UNRWA, IMF and the International Red Cross Committee. NGO representation is ensured via the ICVA, SCHR and InterAction networks.

The conference is a follow-up to a meeting on a technical level, held in Geneva, 14 July 2006. Norway and Spain are co-hosting the conference.
