The European Commission, through the Temporary International Mechanism (TIM), has started the payment of social allowances to over 35,000 of the neediest Palestinian families in the West Bank and Gaza.
In co-operation with the Palestinian Ministries of Finance and Social Affairs, a total of €6.5 million (NIS 35.75 million) is made available by the European Commission for this fifth round of social allowances payments to the beneficiaries of the TIM social hardship cases scheme. Each beneficiary will receive NIS 1,000 (€185). The payment is being made to impoverished households, often headed by women and that include elderly or family members with special needs.
Since June 2006, €338 million (NIS 1.86 billion) were channeled through the TIM in direct support to the Palestinian population through social allowances payments.
The Temporary International Mechanism was established at the initiative of European Commissioner for External Affairs, Mrs Benita Ferrero-Waldner. The TIM ensures the continued delivery of financial support and essential services to the Palestinian population. One million Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank benefit from TIM social allowances and public utilities.
More than €500 million (NIS 2.75 billion), including a total EU contribution of €485 million (NIS 2.67 billion), have been made available to all components of the Temporary International Mechanism in support of the Palestinian population in the West Bank and Gaza.
