Palestine – Italian Cooperation earmarks 2.18 million euro emergency contribution to UNRWA

10/08/2015

The Directorate General for Development Cooperation has approved a 2.18 million euro multilateral emergency contribution in response to an appeal by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The funds will go toward supporting the “Ensuring food assistance to Palestine refugees in Unrwa Social Safety Net Programme in Gaza” project.

The Italian contribution is part of the broader "Social Safety Net Programme" (SSNP), active in all the areas where the UN agency is operating, and is aimed at meeting the basic food needs of the most vulnerable Palestinians. In particular, thanks to the Italian Cooperation contribution, it will be possible to reach approximately 100,000 Palestinian refugees living in the Gaza Strip within the framework of a food distribution plan for the first half of 2016. The recipients, identified based on a primary needs analysis, will receive foodstuffs such as flour, rice, sugar, oil and powdered milk. The project’s overall aim is to alleviate the negative impact of extreme poverty and food insecurity on the Palestinian population. The contribution will also cover the salaries of 96 social workers, who provide essential services to the same population, for seven months.
