In Lebanon, UN envoy urges authorities to maintain recent lull along withdrawal line 

23 April The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Terje Roed-Larsen, today urged senior Lebanese officials to make all efforts to maintain the welcome lull in clashes along the line marking Israeli withdrawal.

According to a UN spokesman, Mr. Roed-Larsen made his comments in Beirut during talks on the deteriorating situation in the region with Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud.

Later, Mr. Roed-Larsen held talks in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa on ways to halt the cycle of violence in the Middle East, the spokesman reported.

The UN envoy briefed the Syrian officials on the alarming humanitarian situation in the West Bank and answered questions about his recent experiences at the Jenin refugee camp.
