France condemns planned construction of 1,100 hotel rooms in East Jerusalem – Deputy Spokesman of the French Foreign and European Affairs Ministry – Press release/Non-UN document

Construction of 1,100 hotel rooms in the settlement of Givat Hamatos in East Jerusalem (May 2, 2012)

France condemns the plans to build 1,100 hotel rooms in East Jerusalem in the settlement of Givat Hamatos and calls on the Israeli government to reconsider these plans.

In October, we already condemned the unacceptable decision to create this new settlement which constitutes on the ground a further threat to the territorial continuity of a future Palestinian State.

France reaffirms that settlement activity, both in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem, is illegal under international law.

The relentless pursuit of settlement activity in East Jerusalem is all the more deplorable because it increasingly undermines the prospect of making Jerusalem the capital of the two States, which is critical for any peace agreement.

Such plans appear to be a provocation and are not likely to establish the climate of trust necessary for the resumption of negotiations.
