Ramadan gift from UAE Red Crescent to Gaza

UNRWA welcomes a new food aid contribution from the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent (UAERC) for the refugees in Gaza.

The Israeli blockade has had a disastrous impact of the lives of Gaza people. Food prices have risen this year by 32% in Gaza, according to a recent survey undertaken by UNRWA, WFO and FAO. As a result of these price increases, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are now forced to spend around 67 percent overall –73 percent amongst the poorest sector– of their income on food.

The UAERC is responding to this crisis and the distress of people in Gaza through the provision of food parcels composed of chickpeas, cheese, luncheon meat, and other items to 7,000 families. The distribution of food will start on Monday, 8 September 2008.

UNRWA’s Deputy Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi commended the UAERC for yet another sign of their generosity: “This donation comes at a time of great hardship for the people of Gaza”, he said. “Refugees will certainly appreciate this assistance during the Holy month of Ramadan. The UAERC is a solid partner of UNRWA in the Gulf and I thank them again for their compassionate gesture.”
