Press Release

Israeli army invades Jericho prison

The Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, condemned energetically the invasion and destruction by the Israeli army of Jericho prison immediately after the withdrawal of the British and American observers charged to monitor the prison.

The Israeli army’s RAID is a flagrant violation of the settlement agreement concluded in 2002 on the situation of certain detainees in the prison, said the Secretary-General.

This operation is a continuation of the Israeli practices which the world is regularly witnessing, and a clear indication of Israel’s disrespect for all international and humanitarian norms. Indeed, many of these acts fall within the scope of war crimes.

The Secretary-General called on the international community to condemn these Israeli acts that arouse the sentiments of the entire world, and are liable to fuel the sentiments of violence and extremism all over the world. He demanded that all necessary measures be taken to bring them to a stop.

The Secretary-General added that the British and US governments have an immediate and huge responsibility for the prison events and their aftermath.

He stated that all that is taking place in Palestine is a result of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, of Israel’s usurpation of the Palestinian rights and of the international community’s failure to put an end to such acts.
