Success for UNRWA Students in Royal Fitness Awards

Amman — Winners of the King Abdullah II Award for Physical Fitness were honoured on 26 May during a special ceremony held at Al Hussein Sports City.
In its fifth year, the event, held under the patronage of Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania, honoured students who achieved high marks in the King Abdullah II Award for Physical Fitness Programme.
More than 453,000 students aged between nine and 16, including 10,200 from 30 UNRWA schools, took part in the royal imitative. UNRWA students won 267 gold, 77 silver and 22 bronze medals. Two girls from the Jordan Valley and one boy from Irbid achieved high marks in the evaluation stages and were honoured by the Monarch.

37 Gold and 1 Silver Medals

The fourth grader Rahaf from Khazma Preparatory Girls School was one of the winners in the 10-year-old category. “I am very happy. When I was playing, I did not feel afraid because the training I had was very good,” said Rahaf with a spark in her eyes.
“We should have achieved the award on the school level too. The participation from our school was 100 per cent. We won 37 gold medals and 1 silver medal,” said Rateeba Abdullah, the school’s headteacher.
Special Needs

Amani Khalil from Khazma school won the first award for the special needs category on the national level. “The award reinforced my self confidence. Everybody can be a winner if they work hard,” said Amani.

The students took part in different sport activities, including curl-ups, shuttle runs and endurance run/walks. The activities aim to build and enhance students’ self-confidence, help them acquire knowledge in health, sports and nutrition, as well as discover and develop their special abilities and skills.
The school-based national initiative award, which was established in 2005, targets young people, who make up one-third of the Jordanian population. It seeks to encourage them to become more physically active and lead healthier lifestyles.
