NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS

An opening ceremony for a photo exhibition entitled “Palestinian Children:  Overcoming Tragedies with Hope, Dreams, Resilience and Dignity” will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, 23 November, in the Visitors’ Lobby at United Nations Headquarters.  The exhibit is organized by the Division of Palestinian Rights and is presented under the auspices of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Permanent Observer Mission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (29 November).

During the ceremony, remarks will be made by Desra Percaya of Indonesia, Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People; Jeffrey Feltman, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs; Richard Wright, Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Representative Office in New York; Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations; and Brad Parker, representing the non-governmental organization Defence for Children International.

“Palestinian Children:  Overcoming Tragedies with Hope, Dreams, Resilience and Dignity” offers a glimpse into the life of the children in Gaza in the wake of the 2014 conflict.  The exhibition highlights the conflict’s devastating effects along with the youth’s dreams for the future.

In Gaza, children older than five years of age have already endured three conflicts, and children aged 10 or less have only known life under Israel’s blockade, now in its eighth year, in addition to more than 48 years of Israeli occupation.  To this day, there are more than 308,000 children in need of psychosocial support in the Gaza Strip, where the 2014 conflict left 551 children dead and 3,370 injured, some in ways that will affect them for the rest of their lives.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed in accordance with the provisions of the General Assembly resolution  32/40 B of 2 December 1977.  Detailed information is available at:  unispal.un.org and www.facebook.com/UN.palestinianrights.
