Birzeit University and UNDP Sign Agreement to Support
Anti-Corruption Efforts in the occupied Palestinian territory

Ramallah, 03 May 2013 – The Institute of Law at Birzeit University and the United Nations Development Programme signed a partnership agreement as part of its joint UNDP/EUPOL COPPS Programme to implement a comprehensive training to reinforce principles of good governance, transparency and accountability in anti-corruption efforts.

Reinforcing national ownership and harnessing local expertise are basic pillars of the approach that will be adopted during the implementation of the training programme. In this context, the Institute of Law will focus on the need to build and empower national institutions in all aspects of planning, implementation and evaluation.

The topics have been selected and designed on the basis of the needs of PACC and CCC staff. Thus, the programme entails a selection of trainers who possess a high level of experience and specialisation and include the development of appropriate curricula, which will be subject to continuous refinement, catering to the needs of those working in the field of fighting corruption.

The training programme consists of three components; the first targets the team of the PACC in terms of legal, technical and administrative personnel; the second targets the PACC prosecutors and other members of the public prosecution and the third targets the CCC judges and court employees.

The agreement, signed by the President of Birzeit University, Dr Khalil All-Hindi and the UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator, Mr Frode Mauring, marks an important commitment to strengthening the capacities of Palestinian entities working to combat corruption, namely the staff of the Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) and the Corruption Crimes Court (CCC).
