Russia strongly and unequivocally condemns attack on Jerusalem synagogue – Russia MoFA press release/Non-UN document

Comment by the Information and Press Department regarding an attack on a Jerusalem synagogue

2637-18-11-2014

In the morning of 18 November, a synagogue in Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighbourhood was attacked. According to media reports, four Israelis were killed and several others injured. The two Palestinian attackers were shot dead by the police.

We strongly and unequivocally condemn this act of terror.

The killing of civilians, whatever its motives, is an inhuman crime. We express our sincere condolences to the relatives of those killed and wish those injured a speedy recovery.

We note with profound regret that this is far from the first act of violence in recent days against Israeli and Palestinian civilians, coming amid a dangerous escalation of tension in East Jerusalem, which is spilling over to other Palestinian territories and some parts of Israel. We are especially alarmed by the attempts to give the conflict an extremely dangerous religious dimension.

We call upon Palestinians and Israelis to take urgent measures to curb extremists, who are threatening to irreversibly detonate the situation. From a political standpoint, we continue to insist on the resumption of the negotiation process between the two parties on the well-known basis of international law, in the course of which all issues pertaining to the final status of Palestinian territories should be resolved, including a mutually acceptable solution to the issue of Jerusalem.
