Syria/OPT: Danish Ambassador inaugurates new school in Yarmouk

Damascus – Mr. Ole Egberg Mikkelsen, Ambassador of Denmark to Syria, today laid the foundation stone of al-Maliyeh/Tarshiha school in Yarmouk. The school will be constructed and equipped with a donation from the Danish Government in the amount of US$ 1,030,000.

Operating on a double-shift, the school will accommodate some 2500 students from Yarmouk. It will also provide the community with access to computer technology and learning material and improve the learning environment for pupils and teachers.

"This timely donation by the Danish government is testimony to its conviction that investing in Palestine refugee children in Yarmouk is investing in the productive future that they deserve," said Panos Moumtzis, Director of UNRWA Affairs in Syria. Moumtzis also highlighted UNRWA’s appreciation of "such a solid and tangible expression of commitment to the well-being of Palestine refugees."

"The Danish government is committed to helping ensure that Palestine refugee children get the opportunities they deserve," said Ambassador Egberg Mikkelsen in his inaugural speech.

Mr. Ali Mustafa, Director-General of the General Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees (GAPAR) expressed his thanks to the Syrian government for their continued support to Palestine refugees and UNRWA. He also remarked that Denmark’s contribution testifies to the international community’s commitment to UNRWA.

Since the establishment of UNRWA, Denmark has been one of the largest international donors to Palestine refugees in the region. This year Denmark has even further increased its funding to UNRWA. The Danish government remains strongly supportive of a just and lasting solution to the Palestine refugee question.

UNRWA is a humanitarian and human development agency providing education, health care, social services, micro-credit and emergency relief to over 4 million registered refugees living in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic.
