The Permanent Mission of Kazakstan to the United Nations presents its compliments to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and has the honour to transmit the text of a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakstan dated 28 September 1996 on the recent events in the Middle East.

The Permanent Mission of Kazakstan to the United Nations would be grateful for the circulation of this statement as a document of the Security Council.

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF KAZAKSTAN

The news of the many losses of life as a result of the bloody confrontations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank caused by the building by the Israeli authorities of a tunnel under the Temple Mount in Old Jerusalem, not far from the Muslim Holy Places the Al-Aqsa and Qubbat al-Sakhrah Mosques was received in Kazakstan with great concern.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakstan considers that this development in the situation not only calls in question the further dialogue between Palestine and Israel, but also constitutes a serious threat to the entire peace process in the Middle East.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakstan calls on the parties involved in the conflict to show restraint and patience and to do everything possible to prevent actions capable of destroying the prospects of the long-awaited peace in the region.
