Situation in Lebanon – Letter from Lebanon

Letter dated 22 October 1994 from the Permanent

Representative of Lebanon to the United Nations

addressed to the Secretary-General

On instructions from my Government, and with reference to our previous letters concerning Israeli attacks on Lebanon, I regret to have to inform you that, since 20 October 1994, the Israeli occupation forces have carried out daily attacks on south Lebanon in the form of escalating bombardments from air and land, using a number of different kinds of weapons, including nail bombs, the use of which is internationally outlawed.  The artillery bombardment by Israeli forces based on Tellat al-Dabché, directed against the town of Nabatiyah, caused the deaths of seven citizens, one of whom was a sergeant in the Lebanese army, the injury of six others, some of them critically, and serious material damage to houses, property and crops.

These most recent Israeli bombardments represent a new instalment in the series of destructive and bloody Israeli attacks undertaken by the forces of occupation; they constitute unjustifiable acts of provocation, and an extension and reinforcement of the occupation of Lebanese territory in contravention of the United Nations Charter and Security Council resolutions, especially resolution 425 (1978).

The Lebanese Government condemns and rejects these new attacks on the sovereignty of Lebanon and the security of its citizens, and requests the international community, as represented by the members of the Security Council, especially the five permanent members, and the Secretariat, to intervene in order to persuade Israel to cease its attacks on Lebanese territory immediately, and comply with the principles of international law and Security Council resolutions.

I should be grateful if you could circulate this letter as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 38, and as a Security Council document.

(Signed) Samir MOUBARAK

Permanent Representative
