Lebanon situation/Militias/Refugee camps – SecGen sixth semi-annual report under S/RES/1559 (2004) – Letter from Iran

Identical letters dated 2 November 2007 from the Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and

to the President of the Security Council

Upon instructions from my Government, and with regard to certain unfounded allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran reflected in the Secretary-General’s latest report on resolution 1559 (2004)[Link], circulated as document S/2007/629, I wish to state that the Islamic Republic of Iran categorically rejects the said allegations and stresses that it has never provided the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) with military or training support. Iran has been, and will remain, unwavering in its unequivocal support for the stability and security of Lebanon and will continue to be against any tension or instability in that country. In the same vein, from the very beginning of the outbreak of violence in the Nahr al-Bared refugees’ camp, the Islamic Republic of Iran condemned the said unacceptable and dangerous violence. We are of the view that only those who are hostile to the independence and stability of Lebanon, first and foremost the Zionist regime, stand to benefit from violence and chaos in that country.

The said allegations, originated from Israeli sources, are the latest example of a pre-planned attempt by the Israeli regime, aimed at distracting the international community’s attention from its aggressive and unlawful policies and practices vis-à-vis Lebanon and others in the region, particularly the defenceless Palestinian people.

It is our firm belief that the Secretary-General’s reports, in particular those related to major issues of peace and security, should be impartial, factual and based on concrete evidence. Therefore, the Secretary-General should exercise maximum vigilance over the contents of such reports in order to prevent them from being turned into a platform for the misleading, unfounded and one-sided allegations manufactured by the Israeli regime against others.

I will be grateful if you could arrange for the present letter to be circulated as a document of the Security Council. I am also sending an identical letter in this regard to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

(Signed ) Mohammad Khazaee

Ambassador

Permanent Representative
