Statement on the Middle East question
In view of the situation created by the prolonged Middle East conflict, of its implications and effects on world peace and the livelihood of the peoples of developing countries in general and of the present efforts seriously being undertaken towards an immediate peaceful solution of this problem, which clearly require a wide support, it is deemed necessary to issue the following statement:
1. The ASEAN member countries firmly believe and emphatically stress the urgent need to prevent the deterioration of the situation and to established a just and lasting solution in conformity with the United Nations Charter and Security Council resolution 242 (1967) and other related United Nations resolutions.
2. The continuing occupation of the territories seized during the 1967 conflict and subsequent measures taken by Israel to consolidate its control run counter to the spirit and letter of existing United Nations resolutions.
3. The ASEAN member countries deeply deplore and vigorously condemn the acts of territorial expansion by force, in blatant violation of the principles and norms in international relations.
4. The ASEAN member countries strongly urge that the lawful rights of the Palestine people be fully respected and restored.
On behalf of ASEAN member countries
Minister for Foreign Affairs
Republic of Indonesia
